Video: In this video, I’m going to tell you about skin tags and hormones. Have you ever gone through a period of time where it seems every time you look into the mirror a new skin tag has popped up? It could be because of your hormones and it could happen to men also. If you want to see more skin tag videos like this one, click that subscribe button and ring the bell. There are many possible causes of skin tags like Skin friction and insulin resistance. Other risk factors can include obesity, hereditary and people with diabetes. Another cause is hormones and can happen in men or women and there are studies to back it up which I’ll link to down below and tell you about right now. The first way hormones can cause skin tags are during pregnancy. There are 2 pregnancy hormones in particular that can cause skin tags. The 1st one is leptin which increases during the second trimester. In a study conducted by Cairo University’s department of dermatology, the researchers took 45 biopsies from 15 people that had skin tags. They found out that the skin tags had a higher level of leptin compared to the person’s normal skin. Another study published in 2013, compared 2 groups, one group of people with 3 or more skin tags and the other group with no skin tags. The researchers found the people with skin tags had higher levels of leptin serum. The next pregnancy hormone is estrogen. Estrogen levels increase at a steady rate during pregnancy and peak in the 3rd trimester. In one study the researchers compared 2 groups, one with skin tags and one group without. They found that estrogen receptor levels were significantly higher in the people with skin tags. Another estrogen study took biopsies from the skin tags of 25 people. They found skin tags was associated with estrogen receptors which may implicate them in the development of skin tags.
The next cause of skin tags is menopause. Like pregnancy, hormone levels during menopause go through drastic changes. Because of the hormone changes, women experience many changes to their skin including the development of skin tags. Another reason why hormones can cause skin tags is when they are out of balance. A hormone imbalance occurs when there is too little or too much of a hormone. When hormones are out of balance it can have a negative affect on your body in many ways. Estrogen and leptin levels can go out of balance even when you’re not pregnant and it can happen to men also. High estrogen levels in men can lead to increased chest and belly fat, night sweats and as I already noted high estrogen levels is associated with skin tags.
